Space planning
A software package developed for the London Financial Futures and Options Exchange. Driven by their need to 'prove' redesigns prior to their execution. LIFFE commissioned a package to be used for trading floor redesign, planning, visualisation and evaluation.

Using the virtual hand to point, gesture and change the virtual environment proved to be the most interactive and rewarding method of control.

The experience was designed to allow the user complete freedom of movement. Coupled with the control mechanism, it proved to be the best way to recreate real world obstruction problems. For instance, if a bank of monitors were situated too low, the user could then alter their position within the virtual world.

Camera positions situated throughout the trading floor present an accurate viewpoint of the whole floor area. The user is able to populate trading pits, move booths and banks of monitors using the virtual hand mechanism. Different camera positions allow the user to develop a sense of proportion, so that when planning the environment they will be able to design it so that there are no obstructions.

Although this program was produced a few years ago, the actual technology application is still very much
cutting edge and relevant. The basics of the program could be applied to numerous architectural projects
where space is a premium or lines of sight are important. To have the ability to visualise a design in full detail,
change textures or move objects in real time and save all co-ordinates out into a CAD file for the architects
and designers to interpret, is an extremely valuable and unique tool.
