Leicester City's New Stadium Development 2001 '02
Maelstrom recently produced a Real Time VR program for Premiership Football Club Leicester City's new Stadium development. The entire structure was created from the architectural plans enabling us to achieve absolute accuracy. The Stadium Design is copyright of Leicester City Plc and for further information about the stadium development click here! The software is the biggest real-time architectural project ever produced; covering around 600 sq.m, 32,000 seats individually plotted, and includes most interior rooms.

Maelstrom is fast becoming known for its work in the architectural field and Matt Davies (Sales & Marketing Director) was recently (14.05.01) interviewed in the architecture section of 'The Guardian' by Jonathon Glancey. Glancey stated:" Within 15 minutes of Davies explaining the program to me, I was happily rethinking the structure of Leicester City's new stadium, as well as the positioning of seats, the location of lavatories, the paint colours in the bars (and even the choice of drinks), and the layout of the directors boxes. MVP's (Maelstrom) program is new in that it marries realistic graphics to the technical world of working drawings and structural engineering calculations. So the program is both fun to use and highly informative." You can read the whole interview here!

The work was commissioned by the club for a number of reasons including;

To aid in the planning process and design of the stadium - the VR version is built entirely to scale, enabling
planners and builders to identify and solve any problems that may exist. Maelstrom used the architectural plans
and drawings, as well as the original tender document, to produce the software, so ensuring complete accuracy.

As the virtual stadium also includes the immediate surrounding area, it is also possible to see how it will look
in situ. Maelstrom took aerial photography to place the virtual stadium in the correct physical surroundings.

PR - To aid in the publicity of the new plans, enabling the public and press to walk around the stadium, years
before it is built. The VR software is part of The British Council’s Football Nation world-wide touring exhibition.

Sales - The program enables users to select any of the 32,000 seats and look at the view, in real-time from
every single seat. Every seat is in its’ exact position, even down to the correct amount of leg room. Corporate
boxes are also included, and they have facilities to personalise the décor and layout before it is built.
