Puma Helicopter Training Application
Engage-GKN approached Maelstrom to produce the first fully interactive military training program that incorporated the use of two fully tracked virtual gloves, 3d simulated toolkits and the ability to follow a full procedure right down to cutting off the tie raps!

The program starts with the trainee inside a hangar facing a Puma Helicopter. The trainee is instructed both visually and aurally during the simulation. On screen instructions guide the trainee to locate the correct tools for the job, the trainee then has to open drawers in the toolkit, pick up the tools and carry out the procedure correctly. During the simulation the trainee will have to complete up to 15 interactive tasks from locating the relevant tools, removing nuts and bolts, hammering out a locking nut right down to removing some tie raps with pincers.

If the trainee fails to carry out one of the procedures to completion he/she will then fail the simulation this can be as simple as forgetting to pick up the tie raps off the floor when the job is complete. All the procedures carried out were instructed and checked by Engage-GKN to make sure the trainees experience was as real as possible. Once the trainee has completed the full training simulation without fault they then have to do it all again, but this time in the field with time restrictions, under gunfire and with the imminent threat of attack.

The program was unveiled at the Farnborough air show 2000 and was very well received.
