Carlsberg Virtual Penalty Challenge
Maelstrom were approached by agency Billington-Cartmell (on behalf of their client Carlsberg) to produce a football game to run as part of a road show touring ASDA stores throughout the UK. The images above show various aspects of the project from the software through to the design and construction of their bespoke unit.

Carlsberg wanted the unit to be simple and fast to assemble as their would be a limited time for setting up and dismantling the unit, this was because of the locations that they would be used in (Asda Stores). The players would put on a headset and foot tracker which would enable them to look around the stadium in 360 degrees, the foot sensor would allow the player to 'virtually' kick the ball rather than having a real ball there, which is a much better solution as the dangers of having a tethered ball system add unnecessary costs and have Health & Safety implications.

The project took only 3 months from concept through to final delivery. As with many of our developments it is  essential to have a testing period (in location) to check the system and iron out any teething problems. We found that the Asda stores security systems operated on a similar frequency to that of the magnetic tracking system used in the unit. This problem was quickly remedied by getting our system to perform a frequency and interference check before assigning a frequency to the tracker transmitter therefore allowing the unit and the security system operate normally.
